With a weekend off before the final NHRA Full throttle Series race at Pomona California Doug stayed at the Las Vegas track to run with the Western Harley Racers Association on his Nitro Harley. On Tuesday the television show "Pass Time" was filming at the track and Doug had the chance to run on the taping 0f the 100th episode, Doug felt it would be a good opportunity to expose more people to the Nitro Harleys, he would run along side another nitro racer, Damien Cownden. By the time we ran the track had cooled down quite a bit. Doug left the line first, smoked the tire pedaled it, smoked the tire again, pedaled it and got it to hook up and ran a 7.42 at still 198 mph. It was a good chance for those that had heard about the nitro bike to actually witness it running.
Thursday a test and tune was held, Doug made one run 6.86, crew chief Rex Harris went back and made soom adjustments for the first qualifying pass on Friday. On the first pass Doug runs a 6.75 at 207.98 mph, again for the second pass it seemed as if the track had cooled and Doug smoked the tire at the hit, at the end of Friday running the 150 Cu In motor in top against the larger 175 and 191 cubic inch motors Doug is qualified #6. Mike Romine, riding the Top Fuel bike qualifies #3. On Saturday conditions were once again nice even with the higher altitude of Las Vegas, Doug runs a 6.69 at 216.13 mph, on the final session Doug runs a 6.67 at 208.97 mph, keeping him in the #6 spot for Sunday final eliminations.
Sunday morning brings again another beautiful day for racing Doug is set to run Mike Pelrine, Doug runs a 6.67 to Mikes 6.87 to advance to the second round to face his teamate and bike builder Mike Romine, at the start Doug has a great .033 light but can't hold off the additional power of the 41 cu in larger motor and Mike takes the win. Mike goes on to defeat Phil Schmidt in the semis and then faces Steve Dorn in the finals, at the start it was almost even but shortly after that something happened in the transmission and the bike slowed and Steve Dorn takes the win, he had run well all weekend and was the National Champion in The All Harley Drag Racing Association. We appreciate the Western Harley Racers Association letting Doug join and participate in this event. Doug will next race in the final race of the year on his Pro Stock Buell at Pomona California November 12-15. Doug would like to thank his sponsors on the nitro bike, Chesapeake Harley Davidson, Md Portable Concrete, Cecil County Dragway, Rocket Management, Romine Racing, Rance Aluminum Trailers, Energy One Clutches, and Horne Concrete Construction.
