O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals
Houston, Texas
3/27/2009

Looking to gain more seat time on his Rick Maney/Junior Pippin built S&S powered Buell, Doug arrived at Houston Raceway Park for the 22nd Annual O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals Thursday.  On Friday it looked like rain at anytime.  On his first qualifying pass he runs a 7.138/182.90 with the bike coming out of 5th gear, this put Doug in the #12 spot.  Bob Taft  (Crew Chief) changed the transmission and waited for the second session, with the stormy weather and the damp night air, the decision was made to cancel the second session, after unsuccessful attempts to dry the track.

After a very windy Friday night, Saturday brought dry but windy conditions.  On his second qualifying pass Doug ran a then career best 7.011/185.56 moving him to the #6 spot.  In the process of getting the bike ready for the last qualifying pass it was discovered the tire had chunked (lost rubber in spots) and needed replaced.  On Doug's last qualifying pass he turns another career best, his first 6 second pass on a pro stock motorcycle, a 6.975/191.02 to qualify #5 for Sunday's eliminations.

Entering Sunday 1st round Doug faced another AHDRA (All Harley Drag Racing Association) racer, David Hope on the Vroom Racing Buell of John Hammock.  Doug has a great .014 reaction time and again resets his personal best time with a 6.945/189.28 over David Hope's 7.123/187.11.  Moving to the second round Doug faces recent AC Delco Gatornational winner, Hector Arana.  Doug advances with another sharp .002 reaction time and a 7.026/187.76 time to a red light by Arana.    Advancing to the semi-final round Doug faces Andrew Hines on the Harley Davidson V-Rod.  Doug has a .024 reaction time and a 7.049/186.56 pass with a red light by Hines.  In only his second NHRA event Doug goes to his first final to race a red hot Craig Treble.

At the start Douglas has a sharp .011 reaction time to Trebles .040, the bike fails to shift in 5th gear and Doug finishes runner-up to a strong 6.91/193.46 from Craig Treble, who has a very consistent bike all day.  Good job to all of the Team Scream group.

At the conclusion of the second event on the Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Pro Stock Motorcycle Schedule Doug sits #5 in points.  Doug commented that he is very excited to gain more seat time and happy with the bike, and thanked all those involved, Junior Pippin, Rick Maney, Bob Taft and Jim Brown.  Doug will compete next in Commerce GA at the 29th Annual Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals April 16-19.

Douglas would like to thank Chesapeake Harley Davidson, Maryland Portable Concrete, Cecil County Dragway, Red Line Oil and Rance Aluminum Trailers for their continued support.
